Timarchos

Timarchos is a Athenian sculptor of the end of fourth century BC

Biography

He is the son junior by Praxitèle and the brother of Céphisodote the Young person, and most probably the grandson of Céphisodote Old the. All are Athenian sculptors. Pline Old the locates its apogee ( floruit ) in the 121e Olympiade, i.e. in 296 - 293 av. J. - C..

Work

The old texts and the inscriptions allot to him, with his/her Timarchos brother:

  • of the portraits: of the speaker Lycurgue and its sons, Théoxénidas, its great-uncle, of the poet Ménandre (whom one thought of recognizing in a series of Roman copies), of a priestess of Athéna Polias;

  • of the divine effigies: Ényo (the Discord) in the temple of Ares in Athens, the hero Cadmos with Thèbes.

It is quoted only on a registered basis whose statue was lost.
