Theophilus Voirol
Theophilus Voirol , born with Tavannes (Swiss) in 1781 and deceased in 1853, is a general of Empire.
Wars of the Revolution and the Empire
It was made merchant with Basle, when it enlisted in the auxiliary battalion of theTerrible one.
Voirol took share as second lieutenant with the battles of Austerlitz, fought then with Pultusk and in Spain, where it was promoted major, and made the countryside of 1812 in Russia. Promoted colonel the following year, it was distinguished during the countryside from France, in particular with Nogent-sur-Seine and with Bar-sur-Aube 1814, and accepted Napoleon the rank of brigadier general. During the Hundred Days, Voirol will coopéra with the defense of Strasbourg.
Restoration and Monarchy of July
At the beginning of the Second Restoration, it fell in disgrace, and its rank of brigadier general was removed to him; but one returned it to him in 1823. The Campagne of Belgium, which it made in 1831 and 1832, were worth to him the shoulder pads of major general in 1833. April 29th of the same year, it accepted the command as a temporary chief of the Armée with Africa. It preserved this function until July 27th, 1834.
Its 17 months of being able were especially soldiers. It made occupy Bougie, Arzew and Mostaganem, and was devoted to many races in the Mitidja with the continuation of the Hadjouth, which it was impotent to overcome.
One owes him the opening of the first mutual school with Algiers on May 27th, 1833; establishment of the hospital of the Dey and that of the Catholic church; institution of a National guard in Algiers; the organization of criminal justice; the creation of the centers of Kouba and Dely-Ibrahim; the drying of the Marsh of Harach. But the capital work of the Voirol general is the layout and the beginning of execution of the roads of the the Sahel and Mitidja.
In 1839, Louis-Philippe gave him a seat with the Chambre of the pars and letters of great naturalization.
