The oca del Cairo
the oca del Cairo (the goose of Cairo) is a Opera buffa in three acts, K. 422, begun with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in July 1783 but abandoned in October. The complete booklet of Giovanni Battista Varesco was preserved. Mozart finished seven of the ten numbers of the first act, plus some récitatifs; its music lasts approximately 45 minutes.
Gift Pippo, a Spanish marquis, keeps his only daughter Celidora locked up in her tower. It is promised in marriage to the count Lionetto, but its true love is Biondello, a rich person gentleman. Biondello bets with the marquis that, if it can save Celidora of the tower within one year, it will marry it. It succeeds by penetrating in the garden of the tower inside a large mechanical, new goose Trojan horse.
The correspondence of Mozart shows that the Vienneses sought a comic booklet to like him, but quickly gave up the booklet of Varesco because of the stupidity of the end, a grotesque copy of the legend of the Trojan horse.
The first representation took place on June 6th, 1867 with the Theater of Parisian Imaginations in Paris. Several versions were assembled while adapting of another musics. The first execution in concert took place with Frankfurt in April 1860 with pieces of Lo sposo deluso and arias in concert. Fragments of these two incomplete operas more Der Schauspieldirektor were arranged in Waiting for Figaro, and played in 2002 by the Bampton Classical Opera.
