The War off the Jewels
The War off the Jewels (the War of the jewels) is the eleventh volume of the series of the Histoire of the Earth of the Medium . Published by Christopher Tolkien in 1995, it was not translated yet into French in 2005. With the preceding volume, Morgoth' S Boxing ring , it includes/understands the major part of the texts of J.R.R. Tolkien concerning the First Age written after the completion of the Seigneur of the Rings . As its name indicates it, the book is centered on the events of the Beleriand (the name of Guerre of the jewels indicates the fight between the Noldor and Morgoth for the possession of the Silmarils). This book is composed of four parts:
-
first is consisted of the Gray Annales ( Grey Annals ).
- In the second, Christopher continues the analysis of the revision of the Quenta Silmarillion carried out in the years 1950 by his/her father. He reproduces moreover several genealogical tables, as well as the last version of the chart of the Beleriand.
- the third part is composed of several additional texts, whose main thing, the Wanderings of Húrin ( The Wanderings off Húrin ), reports the short passage of Húrin in the forest of Brethil and the chaos which followed. Christopher Tolkien preferred to draw aside this text to publish the Silmarillion in 1977, because it would have largely had to be compressed, which would have been difficult, and the result would have been too much complex to read.
- the text Quendi and Eldar ( Quendi and Eldar ) form the fourth part. It is primarily about a linguistic test which analyzes the various names that the Elfe S gave to their various branches.
In this volume, Christopher explains in particular how, with the assistance of the author Guy Gavriel Kay, it built the chapter 22 of the Silmarillion , “the Ruin of Doriath”, starting from the texts of his/her father, which were contradicted on many points. He clearly admits to have exceeded the limits of his function of editor.
