Geography
The city is located on both sides the Loire at forty kilometers upstream of Orleans. The river is particularly broad there at this place with many sand banks. The city is the main door “east” of the classified zone World heritage of humanity of the Loire Valley.
History
The city suffered much from bombardments during the Second world war. The post-war period sees an economic revival, with in particular the presence of a factory of auto industry to the successive owners Talbot then Peugeot employing nearly 1100 people in 1979, but which closes then in 1985.The bridge existed as of Xe century but was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions. First was submerged by a rising of the the Loire in 1363. The bridge of 1836 lasted only one score of years. That of 1859 is destroyed by the French Army on June 18th 1940 to delay the projection of the German troops. Rebuilt, it is bombarded. Repaired in 1947, it was regarded as one of the most beautiful suspended bridges of France. During one rigorous winter, the rupture of a cable of suspension involves the fall of the totality of the apron on January 16th 1985. This day, by -15°C, freezing makes break the cable whereas a truck, cars and a cyclist cross the bridge. Fortunately, no victim is deplored; by precaution, other bridges on the Loire are prohibited the very same day with the heavy trucks. The apron of the bridge, length 413 meters, had however been inspected in 1982. The piles will be ensuites demolished to allow the construction of a new bridge which gives up the principle of suspended bridge.
