The Ste Chapelle
The the Ste Chapelle was built on the island of the City, with Paris, the request of Saint-Louis in order to shelter the Sainte crown, a piece of the Holy Cross as various others Relique S which it had acquired.
Structure
The plans are probably due to Pierre de Montreuil which built it in record time: of 1242 with 1248. This building is a small chief of Gothic work of art, certain authors considering that it marks the apogee of this Article Conçue like an invaluable mounting having to emphasize the relics there being preserved, it was to also be used as royal vault, being built in the royal palace of the island of the City. It superimposes two Chapelle the S, lower for the common people, the higher for the entourage of the king, according to an everyday usage in the construction industry of the royal palaces of the Moyen-âge. In the first times, the high vault was besides accessible only by the higher galleries from the Palate, Saint Louis not having made build public staircase.
Low vault
The low vault, dedicated to the Virgin , was accessible to the people in service and is used as base with the high vault. Low of ceiling, broadside of massive pillars supporting all the weight of the building, it exists only for its functional and architectural utility, to make it possible to reduce to the maximum construction by supporting all the weight of the high vault.
High vault
The walls of the high vault are completely removed, replaced by broad bays letting pass the light, only separated by mean beams of pillars. The stained glasses represent religious scenes. Those were selected according to the site of the following royal characters the offices, the stained glasses evoking the king David or the king Solomon being placed close to the king.The stained glasses constitute a homogeneous unit, whose dominant red and blue give to this vault its glare.
Windows of the nave a height of 15,35 meters and of a width of 4,70 meters, are divided into 4 lancets and are overcome by a pink with 6 lobes and 2 quatrefoils (element in the clover shape with 4 sheets). Windows of the apse a height of 13,45 meters and broad of 2,10 meters, comprise only 2 lancets and 3 trefoil (element in the shape of clover sheet).
