The Small Siren (statue)

Presentation

The relative small size of this statue (it makes only 1,25 m in height for a weight of 175 kg), and especially its proximity of the shore do not fail to surprise the tourists.

It is the symbol and the principal tourist attraction of Copenhagen.

It was ordered in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, wire of the founder of the breweries Carlsberg. It was carved by Edvard Eriksen, which used like model his wife Eline Eriksen, and was set up the August 23rd 1913.

Vandalism

The statue was vandalisée several times, and each time restaurée.

the April 24th 1964, the head was sawn and concealed by committed artists of the movement Situationniste, among which Jørgen Nash. It was never found and a new head was manufactured and placed on the statue.
the July 22nd 1984 its right-hand man was removed, and returned two days later by two young people vandales.
In 1990, one failed to remove the head once again to him, while leaving a cut of 18 cm in the cou.
the January 6th 1998, it was decapitated for the second time; the culprits were never identified, but the head was returned anonymously, and was positioned back the February 4th.
One smeared the statue several times, in particular in 1961 where one dyed the hair in red to him and where one painted a soutien-gorge.
to him the September 11th 2003, it was probably dynamited to tear off it with its socle.
It was also draped of a Burqa, was affublée of a Godemiché, etc.
In the night from Saturday the 20th to Sunday, May 21, 2007, it was wrapped of two fabrics red and Bordeaux wine, a behavior of Moslem inspiration, with the head covered with a veil.

The administration of Copenhagen announced recently that the statue could be moved to protect it.
