The Old man Cordelier numbers 3 and 4

the Old man Cordelier numbers 3 and 4 of the December 15th and 20th 1793 (25 and 30 frimaire year II).

Perhaps Camille Desmoulins did not subject to Maximilien de Robespierre the tests of the n° 3 of the newspaper the Old man Cordelier of December 15th, 1793 (25 frimaire year II), unless this last refused to read them, or that he repudiated them only afterwards.

Number 3 of December 15th, 1793 (25 frimaire year II)

The newspaper changed tone. Under pretext of history, Camille Desmoulins, by evoking with the Tacit manner of the bloody records of the imperial Rome, denounces excesses of the Terreur. The text of Camille Desmoulins turned to the antigovernment satire and, for the most fastidious readers, anti-republicans. Behind the Hébertistes, there is “the Pitt sans-culotte”; behind Jean-Baptiste Bouchotte there is François-Nicolas Vincent.

Number 4 of December 20th, 1793 (30 frimaire year II)

The fourth number of the Cordelier Old man in addition to the usual attacks against Jean-Baptiste Bouchotte and maintaining the general Charles Philippe Ronsin, Camille Desmoulins will call frankly with the opening of the prisons, is a prelude to obvious with a policy of peace. In the Cordelier Old man, Camille Desmoulins drew argument from a proposal of Maximilien de Robespierre to denature it. Maximilien de Robespierre had just obtained the creation of the Committee of justice intended to re-examine the case of the individuals imprisoned wrongly (measurement which will be reported six days later). Camille Desmoulins benefits from it to braid civic crowns with Maximilien de Robespierre, its “dear Robespierre”, its old comrade.

“Remember you, says him it, that the love is stronger, more durable than fear… Already you have just approached you much of this idea, in the measurement which you made issue today, in the meeting of the décadi 30 frimaire December 20th. It is true that it is rather a Committee of justice which was proposed. However why leniency would have become a crime in the Republic? ” The word is released. The proposals of Camille Desmoulins does not leave any more the slightest doubt on this subject: “Open the prisons with two hundred and thousand citizens whom you call suspects. These women, these old men, these cacochymic, these egoists, these carriages of the Revolution are not dangerous. Enemy truths, the brave men and the forts emigrated; they perished in Lyon or in the Vendée. All the remainder does not deserve your anger. ”
