The Band

The Band is a group of Canadian Rock , composed of Robbie Robertson (Guitare), Levon Helm (battery, mandoline, song), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophone, accordion), Richard Manuel (piano, battery, song) and Rick Danko (low, song). The Band is famous at the same time for its own albums, in particular Music From Big Pink and The Band , but also to have frequently accompanied Bob Dylan, of 1965 with 1974.

The group was gradually formed at the end of the Années 1950, under the name of The Hawks , accompanying then Ronnie Hawkins in ceaseless rounds in Canada. Noticed by John Hammond at the sessions of recording of one of its albums, this last will advise Robbie Robertson, the guitarist, in Bob Dylan, when in 1965 it decides to pass to the rock'n'roll. Hawks will accompany Dylan at the time of its famous round by 1966 ( Royal Albert Hall Concert ). They will follow it in its semi-retirement of Woodstock in 1967, accompanying it during the recordings known under the name of The Basement Slaps .

Their first album, Music From Big Pink , leaves in 1968. It contains their tube The Weight , included in the film Easy Rider . The second album, The Band , will be same success.

But the tensions start to be shown: the songs all are credited Robbie Robertson, whereas they were composed by the unit of the group. This leadership will nothing but do continue with time. Follow of the increasingly disappointing albums ( Cahoots ), until in 1974 where Dylan fishes out them for its American round which is a success without precedent. After having left Northern Lights - Southern Cross-country race in 1975, album which finds a little qualities of the beginnings, Robertson scuttles the group in 1976, informant whom he does not want to turn any more.

Will be followed from there celebrates it concert of good-bye in Winterland, immortalized by the film the Last Waltz of Martin Scorsese, concert in which takes part the gratin of the rock'n'roll of the time: Dylan, of course, but also Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Muddy Toilets, Van Morrison, inter alia.

During the Years 1980, Levon Helm reforms the group without Robbie Robertson, without much success. The group turns in places seedy character more and more, which leads to the suicide of Richard Manuel, in addition become alcoholic, in 1986. The group continues gladly badly liking, until the death of Rick Danko in 1999.
