The Authors

The Auteurs was a British group whose musical career extended from 1993 to 1999. Generally regarded as the group of Luke Hatreds, The Auteurs remained for his working life a group in margin of the scene Britpop.

History

Former member of the group The Being useful (of which a title appeared on C86 compilation), Luke Haines creates then The Auteurs with his partner of the moment, Alice Steadman (low), and with James Banbury (violoncello). Their first individual Showgirl is applauded by the review Melody Maker and makes it possible the group to sign an agreement with the American label Hut. The first album New Wave leaves in 1993 and is nominated for the Mercury Music Prize (gained this year by the album Sweden of the group Sweden). The so French British press but liked to compare them or oppose them. The album contains involving titles, like Early Years , Idiot Brother and Bailed Out , which counterbalances the acidity of the texts of Luke Haines.

The group is quickly catalogued like belonging to the Britpop tendency, but the unpleasant and regular comments of Hatreds on the groups of this kind show the little of case which it makes of this classification. After New Wave , The Auteurs remains a group in margin of the music scene. Their second album, Now I'm has Cowboy , left in 1994, is acclaimed by criticism. Built on the same topics that New Wave , it contains the title Lenny Valentino , which probably to date remains the most known song composed by Luke Haines. The group dissociates itself from Britpop while leaving in 1994 the album The Auteurs vs µ-Ziq , composed of a selection of their songs remixées by DJ µ-Ziq (alias Mike Paradinas). In interviews carried out at that time, Haines claims to find the musics Techno and House more interesting than Britpop.

In 1996, The Auteurs leaves After Murder Park , often regarded by the fans of the group as the top of its production. The songs Land Lovers , Unsolved Child Murder , and Buddha are often quoted like the chiefs of work of Hatreds. The album is produced by Steve Albini whose work makes the songs more accessible than on the preceding albums.

In 1999, The Authors and Haines continue a form of musical toughening while leaving How I Learned to Love the Bootboys , whose its electronics is rather badly received by the fans of the preceding albums.

The original group separates after the exit from this last album, but Haines continuous to use the name The Auteurs for temporary formations, for example for the realization of the album Das Capital left in 2003. This one consists of a compilation of a selection of pieces of the group and Hatreds only, carried out in company of a traditional orchestra.

In 2005, them opus " junk shop clothes" was taken again like credits of the Film Marock

The first compilation consists of remixs carried out by the DJ µ-Ziq. Two other compilations contain at the same time titles of The Auteurs, but also of other songs composed by Luke Haines.
