It is a film on films, the actors, the cinema. Truffaut plays itself the role of the director in this Mise in abyme.
To the beginning, it dedicates this film to the famous actresses of the silent film, Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Its scripte Joelle (in film) is the portrait of her collaborator Suzanne Schiffman (in reality). The homage to the techniques of the cinema is paid as of the title which indicates one of the proceeded S used to create with image one harms artificial by the means of a filter. It is in addition a proclamation of the New wave, since it states the end of films of studio and the arrival of a cinema turned nearer to people.
The interactions between the real life and the roles of the actors are permanent.
