Thapsus
Thapsus is an ancient site located at the east of current the Tunisia.
The ruins of the city are still visible in Ras Dimas, close to Bekalta, roughly with 200 kilometers in the south-east of Carthage. They include/understand the remainders of a mole, a fort, a Amphithéâtre and a large tank. A punic Nécropole is also in the surroundings.
It is founded at the origin by the Phéniciens near a salted lake. After the Third Punic War and the destruction of Carthage, it is used as commercial town with the autonomous province of Byzacène in Roman Africa.
In 46 av. J. - C., Jules César gains an important victory over Metellus Scipion and the king numide Juba I {{er}} at the time of the Bataille of Thapsus during which enormous human losses are counted near the city. César then requires the payment of 50.000 Sesterce S with overcome. The battle marks the end of the opposition to César in Africa and Thapsus consequently becomes a Roman colony.
