Texas of the East

Note:: Eastern the Texas term (eastern Texas in English) is not synonymous with this area which, as a proper name, is written with a capital letter (East Texas in English).

Texas of the East is a zone culturally and geographically distinct in the state from the Texas (U.S.). There are several ways of defining Texas of the East, but the least subjective as part of the South-east of the the United States from the ecological point of view is to define it. The cultural definition is more subjective: Texas of the East was described as being the zone of Texas culturally more Southerner - although this definition can be regarded as insulting by other Texans which is considered them-even as Southerners - what irritates Texans by the East. To make simple, Texas of the East is the area of Texas which resembles more and feels nearer to the Louisiana and the the Mississippi that the Texas of the South or the Texas of the West.

According to the Handbook off Texas (an encyclopedia on the geography, the history and the historical characters of Texas), the area of Texas of the East " can be roughly separate remainder of Texas by a line on the basis of the Red Rivière of the South (Red River) in the Comté of Lamar, continuing towards South-west in direction of the Comté of Limestone then setting out again towards South-east in direction of " Galveston Bay" , although some regard the zone of the coast of the Gulf of Mexico as a particular area. This area includes whole or part of 49 counties, covering a total of 100  000  km ² and a population of almost 6 million inhabitants.

The essence of the area is formed of the écorégion of Piney Woods, and Texas of the East sometimes reduced east to include only the forest of Piney Woods. The town of Houston took its distances with Texas of the East since about fifty years; nevertheless, the major part of the history of Houston attaches it to Texas of the East.

A current definition considers that Texas of the East is the zone located between Road 45 connecting Dallas to Houston and the border of Louisiana.

Geography

The climate is the feature common to the geography of the area - all Texas of the East knows the typical Climat wet subtropical of the South-west of the the United States. Texas of the East receives more precipitations (900 mm to 1500 mm) that the remainder of Texas. With Houston, the average temperature in January is of 10,2°C and that in July is of 28,1°C. However, being located close to the coast, Houston knows winters slightly softer than the remainder of Texas of the East.

All Texas of the East is located in the GULF Coastal Plain, but in a way less uniform than for the climate, with the Rolling hills with coastal north and the Plaine S in the south. The local vegetation also varies north in the south. The southern third is consisted of the moderate Prairie energy of the Texas of the South to the Louisiana of the South. The northern two-thirds of the area are dominated by the moderate forest of Piney Woods, which extends on 61  000  km ². The forest of Piney Woods belongs to a vaster zone of moderate Forêt of coniferous tree which extends in Louisiana, in Arkansas and Oklahoma. The forest of Piney Woods becomes less dense while approaching the Gulf of Mexico.

The Sabine To rivet and the Trinity River are the principal rivers of Texas of the East, but the Brazos River and the Red Rivière of the South also run in the area. Brazos To rivet cross-piece the South-west of the area, while the Red River of the South mark its Northern border with the Oklahoma. In Texas of the East and the remainder of the South, the small rivers and the splits meet in marshes called " Bayou S " and mèlent themselves with the surrounding forest. The cypress bald person and the Spanish Barbe are the most current plant species in the bayous. The bayou of Bayou Cypress surrounds the rivers of the Large Cypress, the Ground cypress and the Black Cypress in the neighborhoods of Jefferson. They run towards the east in the Caddo Lake and the sown marshes of gorses cover the islands and banks of the lake. The essence of Buffalo Bayou was shaven to create Houston Ship Chanel (a channel leading of the Gulf of Mexico to the industrial port of Houston), the remaining portions of Buffalo Bayou being in the Downtown Houston.

Apart from the zone of the Greater Houston (the urban area around Houston) the average density of population is from approximately 7 - 12 inhabitants by km ², the population density close of Big Thicket falling under the 7 inhabitants by km ². The population of Texas of the East is concentrated around Houston and of Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange in the south of Texas of the East, Lufkin/Nacogdoches in the Deep East Texas , and Tyler, Longview/Marshall, and Texarkana in the north of Texas of the East. On its western fringe, Texas of the East overlaps with the Texas Central and the Texas of North; thus, of the cities like Bryan/College Station, Corsicana, and Greenville can be included in a broad definition of Texas of the East.

Culture

Culturally speaking, Texas of the East is closer to the Arkansas, the Louisiana and even to the the Mississippi that Texas of the West. Texas of the East belongs to the Bible Belt, generating a strong feeling Christian Fondamentaliste . Important communities Juives also thrived with Houston, Galveston and Marshall since the XIXe century. Although more than 35% of the urban population and rural of Texas is Hispanique, this category is much represented in Texas of the East where the Afro-américain S still constitute most important Minorité. Nevertheless, the Hispanic ones are from now on twice more numerous than the Afro-Americans in the town of Houston which can or not be included in Texas of the traditional East. During the Civil Rights Movement, several communities clashed about the Intégration.

The Museum of Texas of the East opened with Lufkin in 1976 under the name of Lufkin Historical and Creative Arts Center (Historical center and Creative of Arts of Lufkin).
