History

The Territory of Belfort was born in 1871 from the Traité from Frankfurt which put an end to the war 1870. Whereas the Germany annexed by this treaty most of the Alsace and a big part of the Lorraine, the extreme south-west of the Haut-Rhin, around Belfort, was left in France, and thus separated from the Alsace. There were three main reasons with this decision:
-
the population of the surroundings of Belfort was French-speaking;
- the town of Belfort had shown a heroic resistance under the command of Colonel Pierre Denfert-Rochereau at the time of the seat of the German troops, and it had been inconceivable to attach the city to Germany after the war;
- with the loss of Alsace and its fortified towns, Belfort constituted an effective bolt against a possible invasion.
After preservehaving preserved a special statute a long time, the Territory of Belfort became officially the 90e French department in 1922.
