Ten plagues of Egypt
The ten plagues of Egypt are the ten punishments which God with the Egypt in the tradition Judeo-Christian would have inflicted:
-
water of the river changed into blood: " … The Nile was nauseous, and the Egyptians could not drink water since the river… " (Exodus 7:14 - 25)
- frogs: " … the frogs assembled and covered Egypt… " (Exodus 8:1 - 25)
- lice: " … all the dust of the ground changed into mosquitos… " (Exodus 8:16 - 19)
- flies: " … of the horseflies in great number entered all the country of Egypt… " (Exodus 8:20 - 32)
- the death of the herds: " … all the herds of the Egyptians died… " (Exodus 9:1 - 7)
- ulcers: " … people and animals were covered with ulcers budding in pustules… " (Exodus 9:8 - 12)
- hail: " … Yahvé made fall hail on the country from Egypt… " (Exodus 9:13 - 35)
- grasshoppers: " … They covered the surface of all the ground and the ground was in the darkness; they devoured all the plants of the ground and all the fruits of the trees, all that hail had left and it did not remain any greenery with the trees nor with the plants of the fields in all the country of Egypt… " (Exodus 10:13 - 14,19)
- darkness: " … there was thick darkness… " (Exodus 10:21 - 29)
- the death of theborn one: " … all theborn ones will die in the country of Egypt… " (Exodus 12:29 - 36)
Explanations
Some of these “wounds” can find explanations natural, like:- water of the river changed into blood could be the impression of an observer seeing breaking water of the annual flood charged with sediments of ocher color.

Certains scientists advances the following explanation: the ten plagues of Egypt would be related to a volcanic eruption Santorin. Darkness would have been caused by the volcanic ash transported by the Vent. While dispersing in the the Nile, they would have contaminated it, causing the death of the men and the herds. Ashes suspended in the air would have also started hail (the suspended particles contain static electricity), a phenomenon which one also meets at the time of the sandstorms. The deterioration of the sanitary arrangements (lack of Water, corpses in a state of decomposition…) would bring the other plagues of Egypt (lice, ulcers). The water changed into blood would be also explained by the reddish color of ashes.
