Tempest

TEMPEST indicates a technique to convert into understandable data the electromagnetic radiations emitted by computers.

These radiations can be collected like any electromagnetic waves (radio, etc), which allows espionner a remote computer and without having “to pirate it” (it is not even necessary that it is equipped with a Modem). For example, by detecting the radiations emitted by the electric cables of the keyboard, one can detect the typed keys. In the same way, with the cable of the screen, it is possible to know the images which are posted there.

Name TEMPEST was invented by the American services (in particular NSA) to indicate this phenomenon and the security measures to avoid them.

The significance of acronym TEMPEST was not revealed, and of many assumptions were made on this subject:

  • Transient Electro-Magnetic PulsE Surveillance Technology
  • Electro-Magnetic Transient Pulsates Standard Emanation
  • Electro-Magnetic Transient Pulsates and Emissions Suppression Testing
  • Electro-Magnetic Transient Pulsates Emanation Survey Technology
