The Namibian dollar is the official currency of the Namibia since 1993, it is divided into a hundred and hundreds.

Its code ISO 4217 is NAD.

Dollar or mark ?

During the phase of planning concerning the introduction of a new national currency to replace the South-African Rand, the Bank of Namibia   a series of made out tests struck and in Dollar S and mark S, which was subjected the arbitration of the Ministry for finances to Windhoek. A decision then was made in favor of the name “  dollar  ” for the new currency.

The series of tests contained four different parts, namely 1  mark, 1  dollar (both in Copper/Nickel), 10  marks and 10  dollars (both in money). The recto of the parts made out in marks shows a Lion assis  ; the dollars carry the portrait of a Bochiman (San) which car with the arc. On all the rectos are the indication of the year 1990 and “  notices it; PROBE  ”/“  ESSAI  ”. The back of the parts of one mark and a dollar carries old the Armoiries of Namibia between two ear S, with the word “  NAMIBIA  ” as a chief and “  1990  ” in bottom. The back of the parts of ten marks and ten dollars their is identical, except for the words “  INDEPENDENCE  ” (English) and “  UNABHÄNGIGKEIT  ” (German), which appears in the place of two ears on the left and on the right.
