Talc

The talc is a Minéral composed of Silicate of Magnésium hydrated formula Mg If O (OH)

Etymology

The word is borrowed Arab talq . It appears at the 16th century, by Bernard Palissy.

Presentation

Talc is presented in layers; the isolated crystals (Monoclinical) are rare. It has a Clivage basic perfect, the inelastic folia however slightly flexible.

Talc is sectile and very slackness, with a hardness according to the Scale of hardness Mohs of 1. Its fatty touch is characteristic. Density of 2,5-2,8. It has a fatty glare with sheen, is translucent with opaque and its colors go from white to gray or green apple.

Layers

Talc results from the deterioration of silicates of Magnésium like the Pyroxène S, the Amphibole S, the Olivine and other minerals similar. It is commonly in metamorphic rocks, often of an alkaline type due to the deterioration of silicates know-indicated.

In the careers which extract talc one can quote that of Luzenac in France with 1  800 meters of altitude which is most important in the world.

Use

A rough talc greenish grey, called Steatite or “hones with soap”, was used like material of furnaces, sinks, electric exchanges, etc

Talc gets busy in Cosmétique (powder to be chalked), like Lubrifiant, as a load in the manufacture of the Papier.

In Pharmacy, it is used like Excipient in the drugs, generally like Lubrifiant.

A tailor's chalk is made up mainly of talc.

Talc is used in Chirurgie to restore the contact between the Plèvre and the Poumon, in particular following a Pneumothorax: it causes a light inflammatory reaction which restores natural adhesion. To this end, talc known as European is to be preferred with talc known as American with the too fine grains.
