Tōhoku
Is a area of Japan. Tōhoku means north-eastern in Japanese; this area indeed covers the North-East of the island of Honshū, the principal island of Japan. This area is sometimes also named Michinoku (みちのく).
This area is made of six prefectures:
- the Prefecture of Akita;
- the Prefecture of Aomori;
- the Prefecture of Fukushima;
- the Prefecture of Iwate;
- the Prefecture of Miyagi;
- the Prefecture of Yamagata.
The area of Tōhoku is rather mountainous; it was populated only as from one period ranging between 7th and 9th centuries, that is to say well after the establishment of Japanese civilization in the center and the south-west of Japan.
The economy of the area rests mainly on the Agriculture, which is a traditional activity: the area historically provided the markets of Tōkyō - Yokohama and of Sendai in Riz and other agricultural produce. At present, the area of Tōhoku gets 20% of the national production of rice, although the climate, harder than in other areas of production, allows only one annual harvest. The economy of the area also rests on the Métallurgie, the petrochemical chemical industries and as well as other heavy industries, whose development goes back mainly to the Années 1960.
The Tourisme is also a major source of revenue for the area; its principal tourist attractions are:
- the Bay of Matsushima and its islands;
- the National park of the coast of Rikuchu;
- the National park Bandaged-Asahi;
- the Coast of Sanriku;
- Morioka ;
- the Mont Bandaged.
