Sveinn Björnsson

Sveinn Björnsson (January 27th 1881 - January 25th 1952) is the first president of the République of Iceland since the introduction of the Republic the June 17th 1944.

Born the January 27th 1881 with Copenhagen with the Denmark whereas Iceland still depended on Denmark. It returns on the island and in 1912 he is member of the municipal council of Reykjavik. It takes a national scale in 1914 while being made elect with the Icelandic Parlement ( Alþingi or Althing ). Björnsson is beaten in 1916 at the Parliament.

In 1918 Iceland becomes autonomous of Denmark (except for the questions of politics foreign and defense) and Sveinn Björnsson obtains the presidency of the municipal council of the new Reykjavik capital. It finds its seat at the Parliament in 1920 and serves as minister-resident in Copenhagen between 1920 and 1924 then between 1926 and 1940.

In 1940, at the time of the Second world war, the Germany invades Denmark and Iceland refuses to submit itself to its new Masters. Björnsson, sunken on the island, is made elect regent by the Parliament and institutionnellement replaces the king of Denmark of 1941 with 1943.

The May 25th 1944 is held a referendum in Iceland which decides total independence of the Danish Crown and the institution of a republic. Sveinn Björnsson is elected first President by the Alþingi, he is re-elected without opposition in 1945 and 1949. Björnsson dies in the performance of its duties the January 25th 1952.
