Susan Sontag is an essay writer and novelist states-unienne, born with New York the January 16th 1933, deceased the December 28th 2004 with New York of a Cancer.
Its life
It passes its childhood and its adolescence to Tucson, Arizona then with Los Angeles in California. His/her mother was an alcoholic teacher, her father, a trader in furs died in China whereas it was 5 years old. Early reader at 3 years, it attends the university as of her 16 years in 1949. She marries at 17 years an assistant of 28 year old university, Philip Rieff. She gives rise to a son David at the 19 years age and divorce of Rieff in 1959. At 26 years it is a time teaching in philosophy of the religions to the Université of Columbia then takes part in several American and British reviews like Partisan Review, The New Yorker, Granta or the literary supplement of the Times.It arrives at Paris in 1951.
It was made known by its tests on the literature and Article It is the author of about fifteen works translated in more than 30 languages; its first novel, the Benefactor is appeared in 1965. Engaged on the left, near to Roland Barthes and partner of the photographer Annie Leibovitz of the end of the year 1980 with its death, it was known for its political commitment against the Guerre of Vietnam, then later against the war in Iraq engaged by the administration George W. Bush and against the torture practiced in the Iraqi prison of Abu Ghraib. In 2000, the National Book Award, one of the most prestigious American literary prizes, were allotted to him. It also received the Jerusalem price for the whole of its work. It had also made four films and put in scene of the parts for the theater.
Its test On photography is regarded as one of the most important works of reflection on the subject. Laboriously written in five years (of 1973 to 1977) these six tests strongly influenced all the thought on the Photographie with in particular this report: “To write on photography, it is to write on the world” . She dies of a Leucémie at the 71 years age in New York at the hospital Sloane Kettering in December 2004.
Susan Sontag is buried in Paris, with the Cimetière of Montparnasse.
