Super-capacity

In works of Science fiction, a super-capacity is an extraordinary superhuman capacity. In particular, in the Comic S, the Super-héros are equipped with super-capacities.

Diversity of the capacities

The capacities can be physical or mental, innate or obtained by chance or provocation. One finds of the having heroes a single capacity, others by having a multitude. The diversity of the capacities which one can meet is very large, because much of hero have some, of some area of the world which they are (Cartoon European, Asian, American, etc).

Physical capacities

The disproportionate physical force compared to an ordinary human being is a super-capacity frequently met, as well in the Comic S as in the Manga S or in films or the European cartoons (Astérix the Gallic and Benoît Brisefer, for example). One can quote Mr. Indestructible ( Indestructibles ), the X-Man Colossus or the majority of the characters of Dragon Ball Z . It is thus not rare to see, in cartoons, of the heroes to carry important loads (drunk, Menhir S, etc) or to break particularly resistant objects (reinforced doors, trunks, wall, etc). This capacity is often accompanied by a great resistance to the body attacks with naked hands, even with the firearms. In the manga Hunter × Hunter, the character of Uvoguine is only scratched after having received a shooting of Bazooka. To note that certain heroes have a superhuman resistance without that extending to their clothing, which leads sometimes Colossus to finish a victorious and unscathed but almost naked combat. The majority of the supermen of the data bases Marvel have rule the problem by buying costumes in " molecules instables" with the fantastic four.

Certain characters of fiction can move very quickly. Flash, superman of comic American, is able to move at a speed out of the commun run; Steve Austin, the man who was worth three billion, also has this faculty thanks to electronic prostheses. More recently, one found this capacity in the person of Arrow, wire of Mr. Indestructible and Elastigirl, which moves so much quickly that he manages to run on water, and in Code Lyoko with Ulrich Stern of the Lyoko-warrior S, which moves at such a speed that he can cross ravines or climb walls.

There exists of the heroes able to fly, such Captain Marvel or Superman, or to cross objects (Kitty Pryde); Cyclops and Superman can as for them draw a ray from energy with their eyes.

The gift of Téléportation is sometimes conferred on heroes. Diablo, character of X-Men, can téléporter on short distances, including through walls. A character who has this gift generally can téléporter itself of a place with another, but it is not the only form of this capacity which one meets. In the manga Hunter × Hunter , the character of Goreinu reveals, in volume 16, his capacity of teleportation: he can téléporter in the place of his white animal (which replaces Goreinu) and can téléporter another person in the place of his black animal.

A capacity often associated with “malicious” is the fast capacity of regeneration, which also Wolverine has. In the manga Dragon Ball Z , Piccolo, which is malicious at the beginning, comes from the planet Namek, and has as the remainder of its people an astonishing capacity of regeneration; thus when its arm is destroyed by Raditz, it makes it push back. Rampage, character malicious of Animutants, also has this faculty thanks to its vital spark, which was improved.

There exist more complicated capacities: Magnéto can handle the electromagnetic fields of forces (what as well enables him to deviate the balls as to threaten to remove the Magnétosphère). Sebastian Shaw, always in X-Men, absorbs the energy of the blows that one carries to him to become stronger. Doomsday, if it is killed, ressuscite while being impossible to kill in the same way. Will, the hero in the Doors of Time, can move in time. William Dunbar (Code Lyoko) can change temporarily into cluster of flying black smoke and very rapid.

Mental capacities

One of the types of capacities récurents is the Control of the elements, of the magnetic fields, telepathy, telekinesis, Pyrokinésie…) and others. That can appear in the comics (Terra), but also in the accounts of Fantasy: WITCH, for example, has the control each one of one of the elements (Fire, Eau, Air, Ground and Quintessence).

Capacities related to objects

Iron Man and Syndrome (Indestructibles) has this in common that their capacities are purely artificial. Syndrome can immobilize people thanks to a particular glove of its manufacture; Iron Man also manufactured its own accessories. Only technology constitutes the capacities of these characters, they are dependant on their accessories. One finds this characteristic at the Lyoko-warrior S, which use a Supercomputer to be equipped with virtual forms having super-capacities.

Wonder Woman has various magic objects, of which a gold lasso obliging all those which he imprisons to say the truth and of the indestructibles bracelets, just like the shield of Captain America.

Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask car all its capacities of a magic mask of origin Viking which, when it threads it, almost transforms it into green and burlesque character having capacities without limits, whereas it is only one human ordinary in normal weather.

Voldemort, the enemy of Harry Potter, created for itself artefacts, Horcruxes, which protect it from the dead one: as long as they all are not destroyed, Voldemort cannot really die.

Will Vandom of WITCH has a magic arctefact, the Heart of Kandrakar, which makes it possible the group to transform of kinds of fairy-warlike with capacities more powerful than into so much normal and more adapted to the combat.

Duration and accessibility of the capacities

The super capacities of the Super-héros are not inevitably always the same ones. They can evolve/move in time, and sometimes according to other factors.

Thus, Bruce Banner is transformed into Hulk, an animal of a great physical force, under the effect of anger or the stress. The stress increases its capacities besides.

In the manga and Anime Dragon Ball , the Saiyan S have the capacity to be transformed into giant monkeys and surpuissants, provided that their tail of monkey were not cut and that they look at full moon.

In Code Lyoko, XANA can cause unusual phenomena (usually named " attaques") on Earth going of the simple modification of gravity until the possession of human beings, but it needs for that to activate a tower, building located in the virtual world where it life and which enables him to generate these attacks. If the tower is decontaminated, the attack ceases immédiatement.
In the same way, its enemies the Lyoko-warrior S have various super-capacities and weapons, but that only when they will fight XANA in the virtual universe, whereas they are the human ordinary ones on Earth.

Weaknesses and limitations

The supermen and heroes are equipped with super-capacities, but it is not all. To balance the characters, the heroes often have a weak point. The Kryptonite and the exposure prolonged to the red light return vulnerable Superman; Cyclops cannot do without its special glasses in quartz-ruby; Benoît Brisefer loses his capacities when it is caught cold; Iron man is obliged to carry in permanance its armor to survive because of a glare of shell wedged in its poitrine.
It happens that the mental one of the superman acts on his capacities. Thus in the film Spider-Man 2 , the man-spider loses its capacities temporarily when it loses confidence in lui.
In a more general way, the weaknesses of a superman can lie in his character, its personality. A weakness of Wolverine is to want to only act, to refuse the outside assistance. Tornade is when with it claustrophobic. Will Vandom, the leader of WITCH, suffers from a major need to be liked, that of which its enemies were often useful themselves against it.
