Suezmax

The Navire S of size Suezmax are those able to pass by the Suez Canal; this term is more usually employed to indicate the ships being able to pass by this too large channel but to pass by other important channels like the Canal of Panamá. One speaks about Suezmax especially for the Pétrolier S, but also for the Vraquier S; few of other types of ships are concerned except for some Porte-conteneurs. The too large ships to pass by Suez Canal are called Capesize , because they must pass by the Cape of Good Hope and the Cape Horn.

Suez Canal does not include/understand locks; the only true limit is thus the Tirant of water, of 17,07 m maximum in the principal channel. Even if the channel is dredged with a depth 19,5 to 20 meters, the risk of failure and the phenomenon of surenfoncement limit the draft. The length is not restricted, on the other hand the Tirant of air is limited to 68 m by the Pont of Suez Canal (apron to 70 m above water), and the width to 70,1 m (only a handle of tankers exceeds this size, and their draft limited them in any case). The authority of the channel produces tables of width and acceptable draft, those being able to vary.

Improvements are envisaged so that in 2010, the maximum draft is of 22 m, in order to let become the superpétroliers; for the moment, those must discharge part of their cargo at the entry of the channel to reload it other side, transported by Pipeline. The typical displacement of a ship Suezmax is of 150  000 tons.
