Sucumbíos

Sucumbíos is a subdivision of the Ecuador. Its capital is Nueva Loja, in the past named Lago Agrio, city born of the research and the exploitation of oil in Ecuadorian Amazonia.

The Province is divided into 7 cantons:

Canton (chief town)

  1. Cascales (D. Cascales)
  2. Cuyabeno (Tarapoa)
  3. Gonzalo Pizarro (Lumbaqui)
  4. Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja)
  5. Putumayo (Puerto Carmen)
  6. Shushufindi (Shushufindi)
  7. Sucumbíos (Bonita)

The province of Sucumbios is limited to North by Colombia, in the South by the province of Napo, in the East by Colombia, and the West by the provinces of Carchi, Imbabura and Pichincha.

It presents two zones of distinct relief: on the one hand one of the branches of the third Andes cordillera, dominated by the Reventador volcano, and on the other hand the Amazonian plain, covered with virgin forest.

The rivers which cross this province are Aguarico, the river San Miguel and the Putumayo river.

Its climate is of tropical type wet, characteristic of the equatorial areas.

It includes the Reserve of Faunístique Production of Cuyabeno, with 15 lagoons surrounded by virgin forest, close to the Reventador volcano always in activity. This zone constitutes the habitat of indigenous communities such as Cofanes, Secoyas and Sionas.
