Subway of Barcelona

The subway of Barcelona was created in 1924. It is managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). There also exists, beside the network of subway, a network the RER made up of 3 lines, (6, 7 and 8), which is managed by the company Ferrocarrils of Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC).

The network

The subway of Barcelona includes/understands 5 lines comprising 83,54 km of ways and 116 stations. The lines 6,7 and 8 which are rather the RER are not included as well as the L11 line which is a line of Tramway. The subway of Barcelona transports 321,36 million passengers per annum.

Prolongations in progress and planned

To date (2006), 4 prolongations are in the course of construction:
  • On the L3 line the section Canyelles - Trinitat Vella (L1) must open in 2006.
  • work on a section of 1,7 km with 2 additional stations started in 2004
  • the L5 line must be prolonged into 2006 of Horta to Vall of Hebron (L3)
  • a prolongation of the Northern part of L2 in the suburbs of Badalona is in construction since 2004 and must be brought into service in 2006.

Concurrently to these prolongations, a completely new line is in the course of construction. L9, which will cross the city, will make 42 km length and will include/understand 46 stations. This line, which will be entirely automatic, will include/understand 2 branches in the East towards the airport of Barcelona and Zona Franca Zal as in the West towards Badalona and Can Zam . A characteristic of L9 is the tunnel on 2 superimposed floors in which the trains will circulate. If the expiries are held, the line should open as soon as possible in 2008.

History

December 30th, 1924 the first underground line between Catalunya and Lesseps , and built by the Gran Metropolitano de Barcelona is open. Thus this line, today L3, accepted its name of " Gran Metro". One year and half later, on June 10th, 1926, a second underground line entered in service between Bordeta and Catalunya ; it had been built by a company conccurrente Metropolitano Transversal . This last line was at the time especially being used by the visitors of the World Fair of Barcelona of 1929. The line had been created initially to connect 2 lines of RENFE, which determined the choice of a spacing of 1674 Misters a portion of the line between the stations Universitat and Arc of Triomf comprises besides 4 ways which can be borrowed indifferently by the subway or the trains of RENFE. December 19th, 1926, a branch of Gran Subway between Aragón (ajourd' today Passeig de Gràcia ) and Jaume was inaugurated. This section forms part of L4 today.

Until 1946, it there have only few new openings, primarily because of the bad economic conjuncture. Since 1939 the mode of Franco was with the capacity; the Catalan names of the stations all were hispanisés. In 1951 the community of Barcelona took the control of the two development companies Gran Metropolitano de Barcelona and Metropolitano Transversal . The objective was to manage to always carry out a network of subway adapted to the number crescent of passengers. In 1954 line 1 was prolonged of Santa Eulàlia with Fabra I Puig . Five years later, on July 21st, 1959, the L5 new line was inaugurated between Sagrera and Vilapicina . This line, contrary to the others, was fed by overhead line.

In 1961 the 2 operating companies amalgamated to facilitate the development of the network of Barcelona. In the following years and decades the existing network was regularly prolonged without for all this new lines are built. September 25th, 1995, the L2 new line between Sant Antoni and Sagrada Família entered in service; the tunnel which borrowed had partly been built in 1929. In 2002 a section of L4 between Paun and Pep Ventura was taken again by L2. December 14th, 2003 a new line, L11 entered entered in service. L11, in measurement or it must cross several crossroads, must rather be regarded as a semi-subway or a tram. Nevertheless the standards of a subway having been applied during its construction, its transformation into underground line is possible, if that became necessary.
