Access to the occupation of nurse

Access to teaching
In Belgium, there does not exist Concours to be able to integrate a school male nurse since it is enough to have the Baccalauréat. However, the number of places in the schools being of course limited (as it is the case in the schools Belgian veterinary surgeons), they are the first registered voters who obtain the places.The inscription are frequently done during the days Open doors of the schools of male nurses. The interested students must thus get information about the parts required to be able to present themselves with a complete Dossier (and valid!).
The French students must have the baccalaureat and obtain its Belgian equivalence.
Teaching
The studies in school of Infirmier last 3 years. The Stage S account for 25% of the first year, 50% of the second year and 75% of the third year. The pupils are evaluated by continuous assessment: an average of 12 (and not 10 as in France) is necessary to spend one year to the other.Two types of study give access the occupation of male nurse: the graduat and the patent .

Graduat : the graduat, in 3 years, is accessible to the Belgian students having the Belgian baccalaureat or to the French titular from the Baccalauréat French and having obtained the Belgian equivalent. It allows many specializations as well as the access to the hospital License in sciences and public health and combines at the same time theory and practical.
The graduat allows many specializations: Pediatry, Psychiatry, Geriatrics, operating room, intensive care and medical assistances emergency (SIAMU), Oncology, readjustment, teaching in a school nurse, tallies of health, director of convalescent home/retirement, male nurse (E) of reference….

Patent: the patent is more restrictive and is accessible to the pupils coming from higher vocational training. The stress is laid on the practice.
The patent offers only two possibilities of specialization: male nurse (E) hospital (E) in general care and male nurse (E) in Mental health and Psychiatry.

The access to the studies is regulated. The success of the entrance examination in training institute in care male nurses subordinates the accession at an Training institute in care male nurses (IFSI) in which a part-time course leads to the presentation of the Diplôme of State of male nurse. Teaching
The Institut S of Formation in Soins male nurses (IFSI) are institutes French charged to train the candidates received with the Examination entrance in training institute in care male nurses.They train in 39 months the future professionals with the trade of graduate Infirmier of state (IDE).
The formation is done in Alternance proceeding 50% in training institute (contribution theoretical) and 50% in Stage S practices in medium will intra or extra-hospital. Times of training course are not remunerated by the title of alternation, the students are just compensated and this since September 2001. These allowances (by week of training course) are of 23 € in 1st year, 30 € in 2nd year and 40 € in 3rd year.
The courses relate to medical lesson (infectious, Urologie, Cardiologie, Anatomie…) and ancillary medical (care male nurses specific to each medical speciality, Psychology, legislation, Anthropology…). This lesson is classified in modules, of two kinds: modules known as " transversaux" (the courses are distributed over the 3 years) and the modules " spécifiques" (specific to one year). There is no of precise nature, it depends on the choice of the IFSI.
The studies are sanctioned by partial every six-month period or uninterrupted according to the institutes. However, it is true for all the institutes which a note lower than 8 is eliminatory and which it is not possible to compensate more than 2 notes ranging between 8 and 10. There exist corrections, and the redoubling is not obligatory, the student passes in front of a technical council which decides if the student redoubles or not. He is the same for the notes of training courses and settings in professional situation (MSP).
At the end of the studies, once all the validated modules, the diploma of State will be obtained only after the validation of a practice exam, the presentation of a work of end of studies (TFE), memory referring to the practice nurse centered around the patient as well as a final note in situation of training course.
Until 2003 it was also necessary to validate a written test relating to the three years assets of studies.
To be student
A student in care male nurses (ESI or sometimes EIDE) is a person having satisfied the examination entrance in IFSI. He follows courses in Training institutes in care male nurses in order to obtain the Diplôme of State of male nurse.The students are affiliated with the ministry for health and not with that of state education. So it are not affiliated with CROUS, but can receive a purse of the District council.
In Switzerland
The Swiss training of male nurse (E) extends over 4 years, of which a preparatory year and three years of bachelor. The holders of a federal certificate of capacity (CFC) of assistance in care, of a social VAT professional health etc… can enter in Bachelor directly.
The three years of bachelor alternate, as in France, between theory and practical. They are modular (several modules) and make it possible to build a personalized course and to be mobile: as of the 2nd year, the student (E) S have the possibility of carrying out their training courses abroad.
