Strait of Ormuz

The strait of Ormuz is a Détroit connecting the Persian Gulf to the Mer of Oman which owes its name in the island of Ormuz, located in the south-east of Bandar Abbas.

Length of 40 and broad of 25 miles, the strait of entry of the Persian Gulf has an obvious strategic importance. The strait is a strategic passage for the international oil traffic, more than 30% of the oil world commerce forwards there.

Since the agreement of January 1st, 1975, Oman and the Iran jointly ensure the monitoring of the free transit. Actually the whole of the passage is done in the Omani part of the strait, where the separation device of traffic is located.
