This term is at the origin of the name of the town of Détroit as well as Rivière Strait with the the United States.
A known strait: The Straits of Gibraltar which separates Africa and Spain Another: The Strait of the Bosphorus which separates the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea right beside the Mediterranean (it is right beside Istanbul in Turkey).
