Stavanger

Stavanger is a port city of the county of Rogaland in the western south of the Norway. With 117.315 inhabitants at January 1st, 2007, it is the fourth city of the country and the center of the third Norwegian agglomeration with nearly 300.000 inhabitants.

History

Stavanger acquired its statute of city only in 1125, at the time of the construction of its cathedral. The city is thus strongly impregnated of its role in the Christian life. About 1100, the city became also an administrative and commercial center important. In 1536, with the Reform, the religious weight of Stavanger declined and at the beginning of the 17th évêché century was moved with Kristiansand. The herring fishing gave a new breath to the city at the 19th century.

The traditional activities of Stavanger are the maritime transport, the naval construction and the food-preserving industry. In the years 1950, one counted more than 50 canning facilities. The last one was closed in 2002, but one can visit the museum of preserve now there.

Stavanger today

  • Stavanger is the capital of the Norwegian oil industry . It is in the middle of years 1970 that oil became the first branch of industry of the area. The largest oil company of Stavanger (Statoil) is held to 62,5% by the State.
  • the Université of Stavanger accommodates approximately 10  000 students.
  • a center of war interarmées of NATO was installed in Forus, close to Stavanger, in October 2003.

Tourism and culture

  • Stavanger is located in the area of Fjord S: the Lysefjord, the Prekestolen (a cliff above the fjord, accessible after excursion a 3/4 hours).

  • the old city of Stavanger with its medieval cathedral and many wood houses dating from 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Two original museums: the museum of preserve and the museum of oil.
  • cultural life: the city lodges a symphony orchestra, a theater and several theaters. It organizes every years, in May, the international festival of jazz of Stavanger and in August the international festival of chamber music (ICMF). In addition, the port of Stavanger accommodated Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race in 1997 and 2004.
The city was indicated capital European of the culture 2008 jointly with Liverpool.
