Spray

The Spray was the name of the sailing used by Joshua Slocum to achieve its round the world tour as a recluse who made it famous.

The Spray is old a Vessel fishing to the Huître S, gréé in Cotre and built a hundred years before. Slocum rebuilt it by modifying its structure slightly in order to make it suited to the ocean navigation, in particular by increasing the Franc-bord and its Tonture.

It was 11,20 m long, 4,77 m broad and had a hollow of 1,72 m; its gross tonnage was of 12,71 barrels. Its hull has a rather conventional form at the time, with a long skittle giving him a great stability of road and a saffron behind. On the other hand, the twinges are reduced in order to better support the bad weather.

At the origin gréé in fore-and-aft Cutter (with a Mainsail, a Jib and a Trinquette), Slocum modified it during its voyage to the exit of the Magellan Strait by adding to him a mast of Tapecul and the corresponding sail, changing the Spray into Yawl; it could also establish a Clinfoc by fixing a stick along the bowsprit.

The Spray acquired a solid reputation thanks to its legendary round the world tour; the forms inspired by other navigators during the construction of their sailing ships. However, the account of Slocum east impresses of a great modesty which does not let show through all its skill in the operation, and it is thus probable that it is not so much the boat which the navigator who is to be copied. Among qualities which one can recognize with the Spray figure his stability of road: he thus traversed the way of the island Thursday with the islands Cocos, that is to say 2  700 miles, with the bar moored during the 23 days of the crossing. Slocum allots this performance to the “pilot of the Pinta”, which he imagines in dream to hold the bar of his sailing ship.

Various counterparts of the " Spray" more or less faithful to the original plan were built.
