Spirit (Belgium)

Spirit (sometimes Eurospirit) is a Belgian Political party preaching the integral Fédéralisme.

It results from the scission of the Flemish nationalist moderate old party, the Volksunie and forms an alliance (a trust) with the SP.a. The Volksunie separated in two parties, Spirit, of moderate and liberal left, and the party of center-right N-VA which forms a trust with the Démocrate Christian S of CD&V. The formation of a trust is regarded as likely to exerting an important influence on the Flemish Politique E and Belgian. The formation of this trust caused the departure of the liberal wing of the party towards the Vlaamse Liberalen in Democraten.

Its name is a Acronyme of SPIRIT (Sociaal, Progressief, Internationaal, Regionalistisch, Integraal-democratisch in Toekomstgericht)

Nelly Maes (appointed European of 1998 with 2004, elected with the Volksunie), is also the first president of the European free Alliance since 2004, whose Spirit is founding member.

Its leader since 2003 is Geert Lambert. spirit takes part in the Belgian Federal government (there is no more one minister in the government, Bert Anciaux (Spirit) is now minister in the Gouvernement of the Flemish community and is replaced by Renaat Landuyt (Sp.a) the July 20th 2004). Els Van Weert (Spirit) is Secretary of State to Sustainable development and the Social economy, associated with the Minister for the Budget and the Protection of consumption.

Its congress founder, the 9 and November 10th 2001, was held in Metropolis with Antwerp.

According to its statutes: “Spirit is a party of Free Democrats, Fleming, Européen, Mondial”.

Members and leaders

Among the principal leaders of this party, one also finds: Fauzaya Talhaoui (first woman of Moroccan origin to becoming appointed federal in 1999, on the list Agalev), Lionel Vandenberghe, Annelies Storms, Bart Charon and Fons Borginon. The majority of the former leaders of the Volksunie chose Spirit: Hugo Schiltz, Vic Anciaux, Paul Van Grembergen, Frans Baert, Nelly Maes and Fouad Ahidar.

  • “the democracy is the source of inspiration first of our action and our efforts. With the eyes of Spirit, the democracy constitutes a fundamental ethical attitude, which penetrates all our action and our thought and remains an element constantly present. It is with determination that we are posed as defenders of the democracy against those which put in danger the company by acts of violence or feelings of hatred. ”
  • “the integral federalism is our discussion thread for the installation of an administration and an order governing the company. District to the world, of the individual until the community, the integral federalism is guaranteeing engagement and participation of each one. Responsibilities and competences of decision will be transferred on a higher level only insofar as one such transfer supports the functionality and solidarity, while offering the guarantee from an increased democratic cooperation. ”
