Speed control by beacons

See also: KVB

The KVB , or speed control by beacons (initial the " K" is sometimes used in the place of the " C" not to confuse control with order ), is equipment of Sécurité used by the SNCF to supervise and control the speed of the Train S in real-time thanks to an embarked computer (Drawer UEVAL containing a treatment unit, a unit of recording, a unit of communications) receiving information on the state of the indication and the speed limits via Balise S established between the Rail S with height of the signals and repeating the information of the signal. A panel of visualization intended for the driver supplements the system.

The driver of the train receives in return the indication a speed limit which it should not exceed under penalty of seeing the system starting the emergency stop to ensure the safety of the Train. A signal of warning can be emitted in the event of light on speed.

This system is an adaptation to the conditions of operating in France of existing similar equipment in Sweden. The Swedish equipment included/understood a chart with a microprocessor Intel 8085. It is thus with this technology that the first version was delivered.

Technology then evolved to a processor Motorola 68020 and the writing of the program of speed control in the formal language B.

The decision of installation was decided following accidents such as that of Flaujac in 1985.

The implementation which was done with the whole beginning of the Années 1990 was accelerated after with several rail crashes in years 1986/1987 and of the accident Melun in 1991.

Currently any driving machine, except those of operation inter alia, circulating on the national rail network must be equipped with this system. More than 5000 machines (of which foreign machines rolling to France) are equipped with this system. The TGV are equipped with this system for their ways on the conventional lines.

A European Système of control of the trains says ETCS should in the future replace this device as well as various the other systems in force in the Member States.
