South pole

The south pole is the point more with the southern of the terrestrial sphere according to various definitions. Most current are the “geographical” south pole and the “magnetic” south pole both located in the Antarctic. These two points do not coincide because the site of the magnetic south pole follows the variations of the terrestrial Magnetic field.
History

The first man to reach the south pole was Roald Amundsen the December 14th 1911.

Robert Falcon Scott and its companions will reach the south pole the January 12th 1912. They will die at the time of their return.
Geography
It is located on a plate at an altitude of: 2830 meters.

The south pole is occupied by:- the American station Amundsen-Scott,

- installations of the projects AMANDA and IceCube.
