Sorrente ( Italian Sorrento in ) is a commune Italy nne of the Province of Naples in Campanie.

Toponym

The name would derive from the Latin word Surrentum which itself would come from surreo , i.e. converges , this referring to the various rivers which converge at this place after being gone down from the heights. The name, according to a more whimsical assumption, would be related to the legendary sirens populating these places, those which had tried to bewitch Ulysses.

Sorrente gave its name to the peninsula of Sorrente ( penisola sorrentina ). The word " capo di sorrento" is not other than a village located at a few kilometers of the city, more in height, for this reason it bears this name (that means: chief (height) of sorrente)
