Geology

The solid mass strongly presents a ic relief Karst. It consists of Calcaire Dachstein and of Dolomite of Ramsau.

The most famous cavity is the Eisriesenwelt, a natural Glaciaire calcareous, considered as longest of the world with its 42 km, and whose entry is visited. Other known caves are Brunneckerhöhle, Winnerfallhöhle or Tricklhöhle. They can be largely flooded at the time of the snow melt or of strong rains by streaming. Another important system of cavities is consisted the network of Platteneckeishöhle, Bergerhöhle and Bierloch in the North-West of the solid mass. It has resurgences in direction of Brunneckerhöhle up to 1000 m lower. One can finally quote Schneeloch and Eiskogelhöhle which crosses the mountain of the same name in the southern slope of the solid mass.

The solid mass of Tennen is the favorite ground of research of regional association for the Spéléologie with Salzburg. It collects and publishes the results of its scientific research. New cavities are still discovered, but even most known always secrecies offer.

The questions of the future supply water of the populations and the protection of this resource oblige to know the aquiferous network in the mountains.

Alpinism

The solid mass of Tennen offers a relief in plate and many possibilities of routes to the hikers. It is however necessary to pay attention to the scarcity of water and the very prompt fog to appear. A good knowledge in Alpinism and a physical good condition are necessary although many refuges are available. The cliffs of the plate offer a vast ground of activity for the climbing, in particular in the south, around the Werfen refuge and above the refuge of Dr. Heinrich Hackel, where they are easily accessible. In winter, it is possible to make Ski touring, in particular by considering crossings of the plate or around cliffs for a more extreme practice.

Environment

Since 1982, the solid mass is protected.
