Solid mass of Mercantour

The massive of Mercantour is a solid mass of the the Alps located at horse on the French departments of the the Alpes-Maritimes and the Alp-of-High-Provence and on the Italian Piedmont . Its Italian part is called Massif Argentera or Alpi Marittime . The name of the solid mass comes from the Cime of Mercantour, a secondary central top.

Geography

Situation

In a strict sense, the solid mass extends on the frontier part of the assembly line lain between the Rock of the Three-Bishops (close to the Col of the Cap) and the Col of Tightens. To the widened direction, in particular tourist and of geographical organization, one attaches certain areas to it more to north and the west.

It thus lies between the Massif of Ubaye and its affluent, the Ubayette, in the North-West, the Massif of Orrenaye and the Stura di Demonte in north, the the ligure Alps and the Vermenagna in the east, the Préalpes of Nice and the Vésubie in south-east, the Préalpes de Castellane and the Var in the south, and finally the Massif of Pelat in the west.

In addition, the Tinée and the throats of the Cians cross the solid mass.

The National park of Mercantour amongst other things includes the solid mass on the side French, other than the zone located between the station of Isola 2000 and the Lake Rabuons.

Geology

The solid mass consists of crystalline rocks very old (approximately 350 million years), mainly of the Gneiss and the outcrops of Granite (as in Cairo de Préfouns, with the Head of Claus, the Geign Point). In the east of the solid mass, one meets sedimentary rocks more recent like the Calcaire, the Schiste, the sandstone purplished Vallée of the Wonders. It is also the case in the north and the west of the solid mass, on the edges of the valleys of the Ubaye, Tinée and the VAr, where the alluvia are still present.
