The sociocultural animation takes part in the improvement of the local environment, sets up of the events, proposes activities and contributes to bring to a successful conclusion projects.

It is not the nature of the activity which defines animation, its specificity resides in the fact that the participants in the various activities draw up between them reports/ratios of which rise for them from the benefit: the activity itself, the personal development and reinforcement of their network of sociability.
Sociocultural animation thus allows the development of the Social relations of those which take part in it and the increase in their autonomy. It is thus not defined only by activities of which one could draw up the list, nor by a degree of implication of the professional organizer. The voluntary organizers engage, apart from their principal activity (study, work…), to take part punctually in the organization of holidays for young people. These people perceive a compensation for their action. In 2005-2006 the organizations of popular education and the state started a reflection in order to pose a precise legal framework upon this engagement. This reflection has leads on the relative law to the associative voluntary service and educational engagement (published on May 25th with the Official journal).
Since many years sociocultural animation in the field of the holidays and the leisures professionnalise.
In 1988 the national collective agreement of sociocultural animation is signed. Since 1993 the hospital public office recognizes by decree the function of professional organizer. In 1997, the die animation was created in the territorial public function. Since the 2003 only titular people of a professional diploma can direct recreational centres accommodating during more than eighty days a manpower higher than eighty minors.
The professionals of animation work in a permanent way in the field of the holidays and the leisures. They have professional diplomas defined in the decree of March 21st, 2003.
Contrary to the BAFA, the diplomas of professional animation make it possible to open on a trade. There are several:
