The smithsonite (of empirical formula ZnCO3) is a Carbonate of Zinc crystallizing in the crystalline Système trigonal with network rhomboedric, Groupe of space R \ bar {3} c, structure Calcite.

White-gray, white-chestnut, green, blue, pink, smithsonite can contain remarkable quantities of Fer in isomorphous substitution, but the solid solution between smithsonite and Sidérite seems to be incomplete. The Manganese between normally only for a few percent, but a zinceuse Rhodochroisite with report/ratio Zn: Mn = 1: 1,2 was found, which suggests the possibility of wide solid solution. Minor amounts of Cobalt and Cuivre were found in smithsonites pink and blue respectively.

Smithsonite is a secondary Minéral which is in the zone of oxidation of the lodging S of Zinc, obtained by deterioration of primary education minerals of this element (in particular Sphalérite. It is also used like decorative stone.
