Slogan
A slogan is a sentence easily stated and selected, which expresses an idea well that one wants to diffuse (function of recruitment) or around whom one wants to gather (function of recognition, of rallying).
Communications tools of mass
In our mediatized companies, the slogan became primarily a tool of Communication of mass in the fields of the Propagande (political, ideological, religious) and of the Publicité. It for example is often used at the time of the Manifestation S to alert or influence the public opinion via the media.
Being intended to strike the spirits with a short and repetitive message , it is by nature reducer and seducer. It calls often more upon the Affect and the mental Cadrage that with intellect to make pass a directed formulation, even of pure beliefs. In North America each state or province posts one of them on the Plate number.
Origin
It is one of the rare words of origin Celte (the Scottish Gaelic “sluagh-ghairm”, marked /slua ' GEr@m/in SAMPA, literally: “cry of crowd”, which wants to say the war cry belonging to a particular Clan) of the ordinary language.
For example, the slogan of the MacDougal clan is buaidh No bàs (success or death).
That stresses that the well handled words are weapons, publicity a combat.
Design of the slogans
The slogans are seldom born in a spontaneous way, but are often built methodically by those which seek to diffuse their message.
Qualities of a slogan are to be:
- poetic (what does not exclude brutality.);
- funny;
- recognizable and resistant to the deformations in a noisy context, (without ambiguity on the phonemes, which does not exclude the word games and thus ambiguities from direction);
- enough runs to be easy and pleasant to repeat unceasingly, even while shouting (one will avoid the “socks of the archduchess”), and to possibly write;
- pretty, remarkable by its written form.
All that does not leave much place to the smoothness of detail, and the excessive processes are frequent (“CRS, S”).
A well built slogan can pass in Even or proverbial phrase (example: Delenda is Carthago, click clac thank you Kodak).
