Slavonia

The Slavonia , in Croatia, is a vast agricultural plain which leaves the capital Zagreb. This plain is limited to north by the Drave, to the south by the Save and to the east by the the Danube. The capital of the area is Osijek, populated approximately by 115.000 inhabitants. The other cities of the plain are, inter alia, Slavonski Brod, Vinkovci, Vukovar, Pakrac and Djakovo. The Baranja (in the north of Osijek), the Valley S of the Save (Posavina), of the the Danube (Podunavlje) and of the Drave (Posadravina) there are traditionally attached.

The area was called a long time Esclavonie and its inhabitants Esclavons . During the Roman empire, its inhabitants were called the Sclavini . The area became the reserve of Esclave S of the Roman empire. With the Middle Ages the trade of the sclavini , let us esclavons or slaves continuous with Moslem Spain and North Africa.
