Skagerrak

The Skagerrak ( Skagerack , Skagerak ) is a strait between the south of the Norway, the Bohuslän Swedish and the North-West of the Jutland Danish. It links the Cattégat and the the North Sea.

The Skagerrak is a small portion of the the North Sea.

Of a surface of 32.000 km ² approximately, it forms a rectangle of 240 km length and 130-145 km broad delimited:

  • in the west, by the line Lindesnes (Norway) - Hanstholm (Denmark),
  • in the east, by the line Lord's Prayer-Nosterskären (Sweden) - Grenen (septentrional course of Denmark).

Sloping of Denmark towards Norway, its maximum depth is approximately 700 meters with the foot of the Norwegian coasts, its average depth is of 210 meters (23 meters in Cattégat).

Its name comes from Skagen, the city most septentrional of Denmark, and from the Dutch rak , meaning passes frank .

It is a sea with the intense sea traffic since it is the single passage (with the Canal of Kiel) connecting the the North Sea to the the Baltic.
