Simon Stiff

Simon Stiff , wire of Mattathias, succeeds his/her brother Jonathan Macchabée, deceased in -143, and founds the last Jewish dynasty, that of the Hasmonéens.

He is an old man when it is named by a large assembly (the Council of Old, people and priests Juif S) to direct the Judaea. He cumulates the functions of high priest, military chief and Ethnarque “to perpetuity until a prophet worthy of faith rises”, i.e. Simon is named governor in a way hereditary (Livres of the Stiffs, XIV, 25): “with perpetuity” (Hebrew le' ôlam) the heredity of the load means.

Towards -141, Démétrios II Nikatôr, king Séleucide of Syria (145-139 and 127-125 av. J. - C.) is combined in Simon and grants autonomy for its compatriots: a treaty of independence negotiated by Simon with Syria restores political independence with the Judaea. The Syrians are driven out citadel of Jerusalem. Judaea is prosperous and religious teaching is transmitted.

In -135, Simon is assassinated by certain its close relations who want to seize the power. It is buried in a mausoleum with Modiin. His/her son Jean Hyrcan I {{er}} succeeds to him the head of independent Judaea. It remains it from -142 to -63, year of the conquest of the area by Rome.
