Sikasso

Sikasso is a big city of the south of the Mali to 375 km of Bamako. It is the capital of the third administrative area. The population passed from 114.000 inhabitants in 1998 to 135.000 in 2005. It is the 2nd city of Mali in population.

Geography

History

The town of Sikasso was founded at the beginning of the XIXe century by Mansa Daoula Traoré. It was the capital of the Royaume of Kénédougou. One touched (defensive wall) was built in 1890 by Tiéba Traoré, king of Kénédougou, in order to protect the city against the attacks from Samory Touré then those of the French colonial troops.

In April 1898, colonel Audéoud takes pretext of the refusal of Babemba Traoré, successor of Tiéba, with the establishment of a French garrison to attack the city. The three enclosures of Touched resisted Samory but not the modern shells and in spite of the violent counter-attacks of the defenders, the city is taken at the end two days of seat, on May 1st 1898 and is put at bag.

The mixed commune of Sikasso is created in 1954. Sikasso becomes a commune of full exercise in November 1955.

Economy

In January 2001 the auxiliary agency of the Central bank of the States of West Africa opened its branch in order to give a dash to the saving in this strategic city. It was inaugurated two months later by the president of the republic Alpha Oumar Konaré and the governor of the institution, Charles Konan Banny.

Culture

The festival " Triangle of the balaphon " , devoted to the traditional musical instrument is held each year with Sikasso.
