Siegfried (mythology)

Siegfried of Xanten or Sigurd is a legendary hero of the Scandinavian Mythologie, central figure of the Saga de Völsung ( Völsunga saga ) and song of Nibelungen. It is in the center of the tetralogy the Ring of Nibelung of Richard Wagner, and appears in Siegfried and the Twilight of the gods .

He is the killer of the dragon Fáfnir and lover of the Valkyrie Brünhild, he is the only one to have beaten it with the combat. Siegfried is victim of the curse of the ring of Niebelungen, people guard and owner of this treasure, to have concealed it. Siegfried does not take account of the warnings of the phantoms and takes the ring, showpiece of the treasure. The ring attracts covetousnesses and, made invulnerable by the blood of Fafnir, he avenges his father for the Saxon twin kings. Then because of a philter of love, it falls in love with the sister with the king with Burgondie and Brünhild forgets some. He dies because of Brünhild which will commit suicide on the funeral Bûcher of the man who had beaten it. Siegfried would be the name germanized of Sigurdr the Volsungr, and dwarf MIME does that of the Regin blacksmith of it. A more recent study identifies the character of Siegfried of Xanten to the Burgonde Arminius, wire of Sieg and Fried, winner at the time of the Bataille of Teutobourg, of the legions of Varus in year 9, stretched at the time of the crossing of the Forêt of Teutberg in a " long snake cuirassé" having for badge a head of dragon.

In the song of Nibelungen , christianized version dating from the 13th century, it is a knight husband of Kriemhild, killed treacherously by Hagen and avenged by Kriemhild.
