De Lorean was a car manufacturer founded by John De Lorean in 1975. The company is especially known to have manufactured the model DMC-12 (moreover often called " simply; De Lorean"), a sport scar in Stainless steel and with doors butterfly. The company is known for its existence short and animated in the world of the car: indeed, De Lorean went bankrupt in 1982. To the approach of the end of his company, its founder went famous to have tried to save his company while launching out in the traffic of Drogue. However, it was discharged, justice considering that John De Lorean had been trapped by FBI.
History
Beginnings
Company DMC (for De Lorean Motor Company ) was founded on October 24th 1975 with Detroit, in the Michigan by the business man John De Lorean, who wished to produce the vehicle of his dreams. At the time, De Lorean was an engineer and a businessman of avant-garde, already well-known of the mediums of the jet set. The initial investment primarily came from loans of the Bank off America, thanks to partnerships as well as various private sources. Contracts also be signed with the retailers who became shareholders of the company if they agreed to propose the car with the sale.De Lorean sought throughout the world of the countries in which it could be helped financially to build its factories. He thus thought of Ireland, but Of O' Malley, then trade and Minister of Industry was declared against the support of this project. De Lorean was thus going to be established in Puerto Rico when the HONEYCOMB (Agency for the development of Northern Ireland) made him a proposal so that it establishes its factory in Northern Ireland and can thus create jobs in this area which had great need then for it. The factory was thus installed with Dunmurry close to Belfast with more than one hundred of million of dollars of State grants.
The factory
The construction of the factory began in October 1978 in the suburbs of Belfast, and the 6 buildings of an total surface area of 61.000 m ² were finished in 16 month. The factory had been located at the border between two communities of different obediences, on a side catholics, other Protestants. The factory thus had two entries different on each side, but it acted more than one practical advantage that of a religious separation.
The entry in production was envisaged in 1979, but the times of development were largely exceeded, and the first vehicles left the production lines only at the beginning of 1981. The workmen were in their great majority inexperienced, and for a good part, this represented their first employment. It is possible that played in the problems of quality which touched the first models (badly adjusted panels of body, play in doors etc). Efforts were made to improve quality, with in particular the establishment of Quality Assurance Centers in the areas of sale in order to bring back the problems and to solve them. Thus, if De Lorean were sold without guarantees, since 1982, the company offered a guarantee of 5 years or 50.000 miles on its vehicles.
The DMC-12
detailed Article: De Lorean DMC-12The reception of the DMC-12 was mitigated. In spite of the long lists of waitings of purchasers, the price of 25.000 dollars was high enough for the market, especially for the many purchasers who regarded the DMC-12 as under-motorized and not very practical. The stainless steel body was an interesting idea, but in practice, its surface kept the finger marks if it were not cleaned with a special product and it were difficult to paint, including at exit of factory: thus, all De Lorean left with the same silver plated color. Some retailers however painted their vehicles to make them a little more original. On its side, the company tried to conceive some colors of translucent painting to allow several colors while preserving the brilliant color of steel, but none De Lorean was sold with this painting. The transmission was either one limps automatic 3 reports/ratios, or one limps manual 5 speeds. A gray interior was proposed in 1981 to change traditional black interior, as well as a range of accessories to personalize its DMC-12.
End of the adventure
The demand lower than envisaged, and the costs higher than discounted were fatal for the accounts of DMC as of the end of the year 1981. The Break-even point was estimated with the neighborhoods of 10 000 with 12 000 vehicles sold per annum, but the annual sales remained reached a maximum with 6 000 units. In answer to the fall of the incomes of the company, a restructuring plan is launched. A holding, “DeLorean Motors Holding Company” would be formed, gathering the DeLorean Motor Company and its subsidiary companies DeLorean Motor Cars Limited (manufacturer), DeLorean Motor Cars off America (the American distributer) and DeLorean Research Partnership (research and development). In January 1982, within sight of the interrogations on the viability of such a company, the company had to cancel the issue of shares which should have brought back 27 million dollars to him.
John De Lorean then tried to convince the British government to grant a help to him but this one was refused to him as much as it would not find supports near other investors. In 1982, John De Lorean became the target of the FBI and American DEA in a business of drug trafficking. Decree in October 1982, it is shown to have tried to make enter in smuggling a volume equivalent to 24 million dollars of cocaine. The proof was a video cassette showing De Lorean discussing these goods with agents of the FBI under cover. Anthony Pelicano, the lawyer of Lorean showed successfully that its customer had been constrained to take part in the business by the agents which had initially approached it as potential investors. Discharged, its reputation was however tarnished forever. After the verdict, he declared besides: “You would buy a second-hand car now to Me?”.
With final, never the required funds with the handing-over with flood of the company were not gathered. The company went bankrupt in 1982, carrying with it 2 500 uses and meadows of 100 million dollars of investments. The British government tried well to make revive certain parts of the factory, but without much success, and it factory was closed. De Lorean as for him was withdrawn in New England, complaining that its company had closed its doors for political reasons.
It seems that approximately 9 200 DMC-12 were produced between 1981 and 1982 (the estimates vary). Certain models 1983 exist: manufactured at the end of 1982, they were assembled by the company KAPAC which repurchased stock remaining at the time of the bankruptcy.
De Lorean DMC-12 knew a world glory when it was used as a basis for a machine to go up time in the trilogy Retour towards the future (1985 - 1990).
Nowadays
Most of the 9 200 De Lorean produced are still on the roads after 20 years (the estimates speak about 6 000 remaining vehicles). Around the DMC-12, it was formed a very active community of impassioned and clubs of owners. A good number of companies were created after the bankruptcy of Lorean Motor Company in order to provide the parts and to ensure maintenance: the majority still exist. In particular, the DeLorean Motor Company off Texas (without bond with the company of origin) has the original stock of the remaining parts of the factory, American stocks and the retailers.
Many improvements were proposed since the end of the production to correct certain defects of the car and to improve the performances of them. The DMC-12 being generally regarded as under-motorized, a whole panoply of modifications was planned to improve or even change its engine against more powerful.
In 2005, it is possible to buy one De Lorean entirely restored for approximately 30 000 euros, whereas a vehicle in good state but not restored is negotiated with approximately 15 000 euros.
Delorean, DeLorean or De Lorean?
DeLorean is written most of the time without space. The documents of the company written with the machine use a space on the other hand, it would thus act of the form chosen by the company. In the composed documents, a half space is more often used between the two parts of the name, it goes from there in the same way for the representations stylized, for example on the cars themselves. The use of this half space probably influenced the vision of many people not to see of space of the whole.
The name of the founder of the company was written in the beginning John Delorean . At a certain time in its life it started to use the more European form exclusively De Lorean in the place. For the period of operation of the company, it used exclusively the version with space when it wrote its name in a professional framework.
