History

With the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants moving in California, the metropolitan zone of New York had only one team of Base-ball after 1957. That went soon changed when the mayor Robert F. Wagner Jr. named William A. Shea and four other lawyers to acquire a new frankness from Baseball for the city. Shea tried to delude Reds, Pirates, or Phillies with New York but failed the first time. In November 1958, Shea proposes Continental League, that carried out the major Ligue of baseball to allot teams to New York and Houston in 1962. The primary reason of the departure of Giants and Dodgers was that the teams wished new stages. So that the city accommodates a frankness, a new stage was to be built. The October 28th 1961, work started for the new stage of the Mets of New York. Unfortunately, the Mets had to play Sports shirt Grounds during two years while their new stage was in construction. In the beginning called Flushing Meadows Park, the stage was retitré in the honor of William A. Shea, of this fact becoming Shea Stadium. The cost of its construction bordered the $28,5 million dollars, in 1961, without counting the many restorations which were operated since. The Mets of New York played their first match in Shea Stadium the April 17th 1964 and they inclined 4 to 3 against the Pirates of Pittsburgh in front of 48.736 spectators. The stage can contain 55.601 sitted places. It was the first stage of its size to have a system of escalator, it could convert football field into park of Base-ball. Shea Stadium also sheltered several concerts, in particular that of the Beatles in August 1965 in front of 53.275 fans. With more than 1,7 million spectators who filled the stage in 1964, the leaders announced projects to add 15.000 seats and a dome. However the studies proved that the structure of the stage could not support a dome, therefore the idea was abandoned.

The Yankees of New York also played Shea Stadium between the April 6th 1974 and the September 28th 1975, whereas the Yankee Stadium was renovated. Except seats being replaced during the years, very few changes intervened in Shea Stadium. Before the season 1987, large blue panels with the drawing of the players were installed. Moreover 45 continuations were added to the level of the platform of press.

ISIC Field

In April 2006, the Mets revealed their project for a new stage of Base-ball, ISIC Field. The team will continue to play Shea Stadium during the seasons 2007 and 2008 before the entry in ISIC Field in 2009.

Description

Today, Shea Stadium remains a pleasant place to observe a match of baseball, except the planes unloading and taking off of the airport close to LaGuardia. The majority of the supporters take train 7 with the stop of the stage to come to attend the matches. Inside the stage, the spectators can observe a massive structure being composed of five platforms of sitted places which extend around the ground. The Mets Magic Hat is located behind the central field close to the table of the scores. When a player of the Mets makes a Coup of circuit (homerun), an apple rises out of the hat. A small whole of steps is located behind the left field, with a video screen Diamond Vision.
