Shôen

As from the 8th century with the Japan, the shôen () are grounds or exploitable fields given by the emperor to large noble or a religious institution and are more or less exempted taxes by the Court. Starting from 743, these fields pass from a specific statute to that of hereditary and thus rather independent of the central capacity. As from the 10th century, their size becomes more important. The way in which they were imposed and the people touching these taxes varied many times at the wire of the centuries.
