Settignano

Settignano is a hamlet (Frazione) of the town of Florence located at the North-East of this one close to Fiesole.

The small borough is the birthplace of several sculptors of the rebirth florentine, like Desiderio da Settignano in 1430, like the brothers Gamberini, Bernardo Rossellino in 1409 and Antonio Rossellino in 1427, Bartolomeo Ammanati in 1511, Luca Fancelli in 1430, Valerio Cigoli in 1529…

The young person Michel-Angel was high there until his ten years in a farm called today Villa Michelangelo by a nurse, woman and girl of stone masons which exploited one of the marble careers of Settignano whose presence explains the passion of the scultpeurs in these grounds.

Roman vestiges of the time of Septime Sévère (fine IIe) there were discovered, which was the subject of a statue at the 16th century set up on the oldest place of the country but which was destroyed in 1944.

Settignano was a sure vacation resort during the summer for the Guelfe S filorentins. Giovanni Boccaccio and Niccolò Tommaseo appreciated there its freshness, its vines and its plantations of olive-trees, typical landscape Tuscan.

In 1898 Gabriele d' Annunzio buys the Villa della Capponcina in the neighborhoods of Settignano, to be more close to its mistress the actress Eleonora Duse, residing Villa Porziuncola . Close to Settignano is the Villa Gamberaia , a villa of the 14th century, famous for its gardens with Italian the, destroyed during the war and rebuilt with the identical one.

On the hill strewn with villas, most famous is the Villa I Tatti, formerly property of Bernard Berenson (1865-1959), historian of American art specialized in the Rebirth and collector (his/her back-small-girl is the actress Marisa Berenson). The Tatti villa is from now on seat of the Center of the History of the Rebirth of the Université of Harvard.

In the church Santa Maria of the 16th century, one finds a desk of Bernardo Buontalenti and beautiful terrres cooked robbiennes.
