The purpose of the scientific project SENS ( Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence ) is the radical extension of the human life expectancy . By a progressive evolution energy of the deceleration of ageing, follow-up of its stop, until the renovation it acts to remain young (much) longer than 80 years.
Description
Since its creation in 2002 by the biogerontologist Aubrey de Grey, this project médiatise (and opens with the general public via the NewYork Times , BBC, 60 Minutes , Popular Science ) and causes polemics accompanied by impassioned standpoint. The guiding idea is to regard ageing as a disease to be fought, and thus to attack the seven fundamental causes of the ageing located by research at the century spent, instead of treating only the diseases which are only the consequences (this last approach being that of current medicine). For this purpose seven sub-projects were envisaged, with the concretization of which work a growing number of scientists. The seven fundamental causes of ageing aimed are:- the atrophy and loss of cells
- changes in the core (Cancer)
- changes in the mitochondries
- cellular senescence
- aberrant reticulations in the extracellular medium
- extracellular waste
- intracellular waste
De Grey published articles in newspapers of first importance in collaboration with very important biogerontologists such as Bruce Ames, Leonid Gavrilov, and S. Jay Olshansky, as well as other scientists like Gregory Stock. De Grey also received the support of other scientists of foreground: thus William Haseltine, the pioneer of the sequencing of the human genome, declared about the Prix of the Mouse Mathusalem (Methuselah Mouse Prize, to see below): “ It has no effort comparable with this one there, and it already significantly contributed to the awakening that regenerative medicine is a very close reality, not an assumption ”. De Grey plans to increase the life expectancy of several centuries, using novel methods, to develop sufficiently quickly so that the new problems (which could emerge with the ages increasingly larger reached) are dealt with in advance.
Financing
The SENS project currently has a reserve of 3.861.000 dollars. For the moment, the principal giver is Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal.
Price of the Mouse Mathusalem
In 2003, of Grey has Co-founded (with David Gobel) the Prix of the Mouse Mathusalem. The principle is to encourage the exploration of any concrete technique of increase in the life expectancy by the attribution of financial rewards to the scientists who push back the age limits in the mouse. Indeed De Grey thinks that important progress in this animal will justify very great investments to transpose to the human being the developed techniques. The objective being the fastest possible access to regenerative medicines for those which wish it. The Price of the Mathusalem Mouse currently has a reserve of 4.000.033 dollars.
