The Senne is a technique of very old fishing which consists in capturing the Poisson S on the surface in full water by encircling it using a Filet. This last is assembled on two Ralingue S one furnished with floats and the other of a Lest. It is operation by two ropes fixed at the ends being used with towing and the lowering of fish. The Egyptians used seines more 2  500 before J. - C. The sliding purse seine and the nonsliding purse seine are distinguished.

Traditional use

The nonsliding purse seine is a net made up of a central pocket in the form of spoon and two ends in the shape of wings. The two wings make it possible to fold back fish in the central pocket and to go up the net on board.

In the Basque Country and the country Bigouden, the seine is called bolinche . It makes it possible to fish the Sardine while keeping its quality i.e. a fish which still has all its scales. The net went up in a mechanical way on a boat of small size and on which can work fifteen people with the sorting and the setting out of box of sardines. The capture proceeds day using a soft food containing eggs of Morue called rogue . In Brittany, the seine is used of night to capture sardines or Anchois. The fish is fished with the favor of the darkness.

In the Mediterranean, the seine is used at the time of fishing to the Lamparo. This technique of night consists in attracting on the surface a sardine bench using strong of lamp. One second boat is launched and holds the end of the seine. The principal boat then encircles the boat and the bench of fish to close again the net. It is then enough to go up the net with its catches and to withdraw fish with a large scoop called salabre . This fishing is known as traditional and is competed with by the trawling pelagic.

The seine is also practiced since the Plage, the technique is artisanal. A net is wet vis-a-vis the beach and this one is folded back with fish on the strike. This fishing generally proceeds in group.

A recent evolution

The purse seine and sliding would be an American invention of the beginning of the 19th century. It would be inspired by a Basque technique of slide used in the Basque trainières of the 18th century. A slide in the lower part of the net makes it possible to close it by the bottom and to retain the totality of fish. This coulissage represents an important advance. The use of the Nylon in the place of the Cotton, the motorization of the lifting of the net and the adoption of the skiff allowed an effective use of the seine. Seines of 2  today are used; 500 m length and 500 m fall. It makes it possible to capture many fish species in great quantity like the Maquereau, the Thon, the Sardine, the Anchois and the Capelan.

Fishing with the Thon evolved/moved much. It is held on tuna boats-senneurs which are powerful ships freezers using of modern technologies to locate the tuna benches. The seine used can cover several tens of hectares.
